Launched in September 2004, the Human Development and Capability Association promotes research from
many disciplines on key problems including poverty, justice, well-being, and economics. Frances Stewart
is the president of the HDCA. Amartya Sen was the Founding President of HDCA 2004 - 2006; Martha Nussbaum was President of HDCA 2006 - 2008.
Human Development and Capability Association (HDCA) shall promote high quality research in the interconnected areas of human development and capability. It shall be concerned with research in these areas across a broad range of topics where the human development and capability approaches have made and can make significant contributions, including the quality of life, poverty, justice, gender, development and environment inter alia. It shall further work in all disciplines - such as economics, philosophy, political theory, sociology and development studies - where such research is, or may be, pursued. While primarily an academic body, the Association shall bring together those primarily involved in academic work with practitioners who are involved in, or interested in, the application of research from the fields of human development and capability to the problems they face.
The Association holds annual or biannual conferences, maintains this webpage and listserv, supports training activities, and provide a forum in which collaborative research can emerge.
Journal of Human Development and Capabilities: A Multi-Disciplinary Journal for People-Centered Development is a peer reviewed journal launched in January 2000 to provide new perspectives on challenges of human development, capability expansion, and poverty eradication, human well being, markets, growth, social justice and human rights. The Editors recognize that development is more than about economic growth. It is also about improving the well being of people, and expanding the choices and opportunities they have. Development policies cut across economic, social and political issues.
The Journal publishes original work in economics, philosophy, social sciences and other disciplines that expand concepts, measurement tools and policy alternatives. It provides a forum for an open exchange of ideas among a broad spectrum of policy makers, economists and academics. It addresses issues at global, national and local levels. Human development is becoming a ‘school of thought’ for alternative economic approaches, and the Journal will act as a conduit for members and critics of this school.
If you are interested in submitting a paper for the special issue of the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities, please view the instructions for authors on the Journal´s website. Manuscripts should be submitted through the Journal´s on-line submission and review system, Manuscript Central, by going to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cjhd. To submit your paper, you must first create an account by selecting the "create account" box on the top right hand side of the log-in page.
